Solar Power Purchase Agreements designed for academy trust governance, multi-site portfolios, and centralised procurement. From single academies to MATs of 30+ schools.
There is a way for a school to get solar with no capital outlay: a Solar PPA. A contracted funder funds and owns the system, and the school or trust buys the power it generates on-site below grid price. Solar Powered Schools is the developer and manages the project. See our dedicated guide on solar for schools with no capital outlay, part of Murphy Technologies alongside UK Solar Fund.
Multi-Academy Trusts are uniquely positioned to extract maximum value from solar PV. Centralised procurement, shared governance, portfolio-scale negotiation, and consolidated sustainability reporting all favour the MAT model when commissioning solar at scale.
We are set up to serve MATs from single academies up to portfolios of 30+ schools, structuring PPAs that deliver predictable energy costs, verified carbon reductions, and demonstrable Climate Action Plan progress across the entire trust footprint.
Rather than negotiating separate agreements for each academy, MATs can sign a single master PPA covering multiple schools. This dramatically simplifies procurement, legal review, and ongoing administration. The funder takes a portfolio view of the entire estate, often resulting in better commercial terms than school-by-school negotiation.
You don't have to do all schools at once. Many MATs start with 2-3 priority schools (highest energy use, best roofs) to prove the model, then roll out across the rest of the estate in subsequent years. The PPA structure scales easily.
The DfE Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy requires every school to have a Climate Action Plan by 2025. For MATs, that's multiplied across each individual school plus a trust-wide aggregated view. Solar PV provides one of the most measurable, visible, and impactful interventions you can include, with verified emissions data feeding directly into your reporting.
We work alongside MAT executive teams (CEO, CFO, Estates Director) to structure proposals that meet trustee board scrutiny. Typical approval flow: site assessment → commercial proposal → legal review → trust board approval → implementation. Most MATs move from initial enquiry to signed PPA in 12-16 weeks.
